Working With Wood Continued

I'm cutting the backs to the width of 26.5" exactly here. This was the easy part, but now it's time to do the length.

I'll be using my crosscut sled to make my pieces square and to bring them to length. However, these pieces are a little oversize for my sled to handle. Notice the work-stop that is in the upright position (arrow). I won't be able to use this because it won't extend far enough to accommodate the large work piece. Also notice the small silver thumbscrew. I added this thumbscrew to my work-stop a long time ago to adjust small amounts easily. And last notice the end of my work piece is overhanging the work area of my sled. This means it will be a challenge to make an accurate and repeatable cut.

I removed the thumbscrew and replaced it with a different one. This one has the end of the bolt just sticking out of the work-stop by only a few thousands.

Also note the tiny amount the work-stop is clamped to the rail. It's not much but it is staying clamped so this is 'just' going to work for me.

With a work piece that's over 28" long, the sled is overhanging on both ends way to much (fore and aft) and is getting unsafe. However, I was desperate so I made it happen.

To make sure my work piece is the correct length, I'm using a machinist scale, which is 24" long. And as you can see it's not long enough so I'm getting some much needed help using some 1 X 2 X 3 blocks.

I'm working on my mobile workbench utilizing a work-stop in my T-track (arrow). With my work piece and my blocks against the work-stop, I know that both surfaces are parallel to each other. Then I placed my scale against my blocks so I can read the other end accurately.

Here is the other end. By adding five inches to this number, I now have a total of 28.300", which is my target size. To achieve this size I took a few trips from the saw to the bench, cutting small amounts each time.

I did the same measuring technique with all the side pieces, but I used my miter saw to cut them to length. Here I'm sanding all the sides and other pieces with my DA sander.

To hold all the side pieces, shelves, and other components to the back piece, I'll be using some #8 screws that are 1 1/2" long.
