Working With Wood Continued

I'll need to sand the sides and backs flush because there is a small step that's sticking out. Now this is no big deal because the bulk of the sanding will be on that 1/2" piece so it should go pretty fast.

I used 120 grit and then 180 grit to finish with on my DA sander. I also broke the top and bottom edges by hand to make sure there were no sharp areas.

I put an 80 grit disc on my sander and started fitting all the drawers. I made the drawers slightly oversize from the start so used my table saw to help rough some of the material from the height, but I had to sand the ends to size which took awhile.

One problem I ran into was during the fitting process was that I didn't have any drawer pulls...yet. Those were the responsibility of the kids and at this writing they still don't know what they want. That meant I had to improvise by using some strong magnets along with a telescopic magnet with a handle. This worked out pretty good but if I got one of those drawers stuck without having something like this in place, I would have a really hard time getting it back out. Again, whatever works ya know!

Once I had the drawers all fitted, I decided to put my brand on the back of them. This way you can see them when you pull the drawer out in place of the back, which would be mounted to the wall.

Drawer Assembly

Here are the drawer pulls that Tracey picked out for her project. They came with two different length screws, and they don't look too bad. But something I didn't expect is they have 8-32 threads, very unexpected, but I liked it.

One problem I ran into is tightening the screws down. As you can see my stubby screwdriver is too long for this extra short drawer so I had to do some digging in my toolbox.

I found this which worked great. It takes any 1/4" hex bit and it has a magnet to help keep the bit in place.

The back has a 1/4" square drive that can be used with a ratchet. However, the knurled surface is more then enough to get the job done here.
