Working With Chemicals Continued

A little while later all my pieces have been cleaned, dipped and rinsed with water. Using very fine steel wool gives each piece a nice look but you don't want to spend too much time using it, just a few strokes and that's it. I'm going to set these aside while I work on the base again.

Working With Felt Again

I've done this process on my last project so I'm use to it. Spread a thin layer of wood glue on the wood, place the felt on it, then use your fingers to make sure it sticks correctly, with no wrinkles.

The next day I used my sanding block with 150 grit paper to remove the excess material. By holding the sanding block at a 45 degree angle and then dragging it against the felt, it slowly breaks through the material. Once you break through, then you move over a small amount and repeat the process. A few minutes later the excess just falls off and you're done.

You might be wondering about those two screws that are now under the felt. Well I gave this some thought before I did any gluing. My thought was that those screws don't ever need to be removed and I don't think they will work their way out because they went in very snug.

It's Finished

Here it is all finished.

The back looks unfinished because the metal doesn't touch each other. But this was necessary so the lid would open properly.

I don't like the end grain here but that's what I ended up with.

A look at the bottom with the felt.

The velvet came out just OK in my opinion but it should function just fine.

I left a nice gap for the rings to rest in. My son-in-laws ring is about twice as thick as my daughters so I'll let them know that his might want to be placed on the left side. This was by design as you can see the gap is a little larger over there.

I was originally going to put my brand on the bottom by cutting an opening out in the felt. But I changed my mind last minute. I probably should've stayed with that plan because my brand didn't come very well.

I hope the kids like their present because I took the liberty to make this without any input from my daughter. Merry Christmas to the both of you!
