Fruit Bowls  5                                              01-2022

Problems Continued

I used my large 6" clamp to hold it in place and left it over night.

Well....as you can see after machining it, I don't have a very good match. I'm going to continue with the next process and think about this for a day or so.

Back to Making Some Bowls Continued

I'm cutting off the excess material with my bandsaw but I'm leaving a small amount of material all around being careful not to touch the nice surface.

Here is the flush trim bit I was talking about earlier. The bearing on top rides on the finished surface and removes everything else.

This process goes quickly and leaves a nice finish.

Once everything was cleaned up, I put a 3/16 radius on the bottom.

This was the pile of woodchips I had leftover, which filled three and a half 5 gallon buckets. That's the base of my milling machine in the background for scale.

I gave both bowls a good sanding with two different grits.

Round 2

I had time to think about this insert that I made a few days prior and had to try again. Here I'm removing my first one with the same 3/8" diameter end mill X 1/8" deep.

This time I'm cutting off a piece of black walnut that came from the bowl, which I should have done in the first place. However, the corners on this bowl are not made from the exact same piece of wood because the black walnut on this bowl was made in three separate pieces. And the flaw in the wood happens to be in the middle piece so I'm hopeful this will look better.
