I'm going to make some small decorative Christmas trees
that can be placed just about anywhere in the house. There will be
three different sizes and two different colors.
Working With Wood
I'll be using some Douglas fir (common 2" X 4") along with some pine for this project,
which was all in my scrap pile. These trees will have a base on them so
you can place them on any flat surface.

I ran all my material through my thickness
planer to a size just under 1/2".
Next I ripped a bunch of 3/4" pieces, but the bases will be
wider.
I set my miter saw to 45 degrees and cut one end (of only two pieces).
Each tree will be made up of six pieces, with five of them being the
same length. The other one will be 1/2" longer.
I didn't take the time to make any tooling to clamp
these top pieces together so I used some steel parallels (of various
sizes) resting against them - trapping them together. This was more than enough to keep each
wooden piece from moving which worked great while the glue dried.
Later in the day I glued the remaining pieces to each other, using some
smaller clamps.
While the glue was drying, I ran more material through my thickness
planer.
These pieces will become the base for each tree. The width is 1 1/2".
As I said before, I'll be making three sizes of trees, which will
require different size bases.
