This 15" planer from Grizzly is a very well built machine and it's very heavy as well. This unit replaces a DeWalt 13" planer that was very noisy and had straight cutting knives. Let's get this out of the crate so you can see it.

Notice the four posts the cutter head is supported on compared to some that only have two. This makes the machine very sturdy. I also put this machine on a mobile work base so it can be rolled around like my other machines.

This machine came with a plug that won't work at my house so I bought a receptacle that will attach to the one it came with and then added a 10 feet of wire that goes to the plug on the right. This made it much more versatile so I can use the machine just about anywhere in my shop.

This is one of the main reasons I bought this machine, because it has a helical cutting head. That cutter head has four rows of 13 carbide inserts each, with a total of 52 inserts in all. Each insert has four sides and are located in pockets making insert changes a snap. Also note the small "dot" at one corner of each insert. That dot is to let you know the orientation of each one when it's time to change or rotate them.

Another plus for this machine, it cuts with a shearing action compared to the DeWalt that uses three straight knives that are made of high speed steel (HSS). Carbide is much much harder than HSS and lasts about eight times longer. Also, setting up the Dewalt planer after changing the knives is a nightmare because you have to have all three knives in alignment.

A helical cutting head uses less power to cut with compared to a straight cutter head, and last but not least is the helical unit is quieter than the DeWalt, and I mean much quieter. I had to use ear protection with the DeWalt but I don't have to with the Grizzly machine.

This is the gear box that has two speeds for feeding your work. The black knob shaped like a ball is the gear selector and moves in or out depending on what feed rate you want which is 16 or 28 Feet Per Minute. I use the 16 FPM setting most of the time which gives me a better finish and is still plenty fast enough.

The three horsepower motor drives three V belts that attach to the cutter head. I've adjusted these belts only one time and it was very easy.

There are a some things you need to check on this machine to make sure everything is correct. In this case I'm getting ready to make sure the drive roller is set properly along with the cutter head being the same from one side to the other.

I raised the cutter head high enough to get my indicator in there and took my measurements. I had to adjust one the drive roller a small amount so I could minimize the amount of snipe.

This machine works so good and I highly recommend it to anyone needing a 15"  thickness planer.
