Garage Tunes Upgrade  1                                                9-2023

I built this media enclosure so I could listen to music back in November of 2012 and it's worked great over the years. However, lately while listening to mp3 files using my flash-drive, things have been hit-or-miss. What I mean is, when a song ends it should just play the next one...but sometimes it doesn't...and just sits there, up to 10 minutes before switching to the next song.

If I push the 'next song' button it usually works and plays the next song, but occasionally it doesn't do anything and just sits there. To work around this problem I'm forced to turn off the power and then power it back on, which works for a few songs and then it fails again. This has been happening for months now, and I've tried different flash-drives which hasn't solved the problem either. That means something is failing internally, which isn't surprising because of the age of the Kenwood player, along with the dusty environment while wood working.

If you're not familiar, I added two fans on the back (intake and exhaust) to circulate air through the enclosure so I wouldn't have stagnate air inside. But this could have lead to the problem of a very dusty environment. And as we all know, dust and electronics don't play nice together. So with that being said, it's time to replace the Kenwood unit with a new one.

Here is the new Kenwood digital media receiver. At first glance it looks the same as my old one but this new one doesn't have a DVD drive. That's fine with me because a flash drive can hold so much more music than a disc can (depending on the size of the drive).

This unit has a few features that my old one doesn't. For instance, a second USB port for another flash drive. The information on the front panel has lots of colors that it can cycle through, and it has more watts per channel. Let's get it installed and see how well it works.

Once I took the back off I was greeted with this ugly mess. However, this was expected because of my two fans. On the other hand, WOW...what a mess!

Well there's your problem dude, it's just a little dusty inside. Okay, it's time to remove the old one.

When I built this unit many years ago, I spliced in a universal plug (white) so I could connect all my wires easily. What I plan on doing now is cutting the wires in the middle of those two original plugs, and then spice in my new harness (on the right) using the six solder-less connectors below.

A few minutes later I had all my new wires hooked up to my new harness. The wires that you see with blue tape won't be used.

Once I had the old one out of the enclosure, I used some compressed air and blew out all the dirt and dust.

I drilled a new hole larger enough to pass the second USB plug through (arrow).

Once the USB plug was through the hole, there was a lot of empty space around the wire so I plan on sealing up the extra space with some sheet rubber.
